Islamic concept of Animal Welfare

While today’s Muslim world doesn’t follow animal welfare principle and anti-Islam activists label it as Islam’s tyranny and attack our religion and Prophet!

So an insight into Islam’s view on Animal welfare is important in current world.

Below are some of the Prophetic statements (Hadith)  regarding the welfare of animals.


The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Do not clip the forelocks, manes or tails of horses. For they use their tails to drive away flies, and their manes provide them with warmth, and the goodness is tied in their forelocks”. Sunan Abu Dawood 2542

It was reported from Abu Hurairah (R.A) that the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Once while a man was walking walking on the road, he became extremely thirsty . He found a well and went down into it. He drank from the water and  came out . He saw a dog panting heavily and eating soil due to it’s thirst.  The Man said: “This Dog must be in the same condition of thirst as I was”.  So he went down into the well and filled his khuff with water, and held by his mouth until he climbed up. He gave water to the dog to drink. Allah accepted his deed and forgave him”. They said: O Messenger of Allah! Are there rewards for us in our animals?. He said : “For every moist liver (living creature) there is a reward (Sahih) Sunan Abu Dawood 2550, Also in Shaih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

Anas bin Malik (R.A) said; “Whenever we dismounted at a camp, we would not perform any voluntary prayer until we let the mounts gaze (Sahih) Sunan Abu Dawood 2551

“The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) prohibited instigating fight between beasts” Sunan Abu Dawood 2562

It was reported from Abu Az-Zubair , from Jabir who said: “A donkey which had been branded in the face , passed by the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) . He said: ‘Has it not reached you people, that I have cursed those who brand animals on their faces?’So he prohibited that”. (Sahih) Sunan Abu Dawood 2564

Islam paved the way for Renaissance and the world learned Welfare principles from Islam. How old is the European Animal welfare system? This is 1400 years old Animal Welfare principles
